Winter is slowing down
Winter is an essential time of year which forces us to slow down. Take a breath and hibernate in our warm homes. Enjoy food which is grounding and nourishing while it is cool outside. Produce with a dense cell structure warm the body from the inside out - parsnip, yams, kumara, potatoes... Leeks, onions, garlic and carrots form the base of winter soups and stews. Herbs and winter greens - parsley, silver beet, kale, cabbage - ensure we eat our greens all year round.
Fruit to last the winter include apples, pears and kiwifruit. Citrus fruit - oranges, tangelos, grapefruit, lemons - provide our bodies with a vitamin C boost during this season of cooked food. Summer preserves provide colour and diversity to winter desserts.
